The French President Nicholas Sarkozy and his new first lady, Carla have just left the UK after a 36 hour state visit. They stayed in arguably the nicest serviced apartment in London, at Buckingham Palace. The president, in his speech to both the Houses of Parliament, |

waxed lyrical about the relationship between France and Britain and that the existing "Entente Cordiale" should be extended and become an "Entente Amicable". We would like to use this occasion to place the spotlight on the country that has given us Picasso, frog legs, smelly cheese, loads of premiership football players and of course "papa, Nicole and her "va va voom"!

EUROPE
* The Apartment Service has commenced grading their Roomspace Serviced Apartments, following the directive of VisitBritain. Eleven properties have received four star grading and two properties the three star accolade.
* Saco Apartments has opened their 2nd location in Reading, Clipper House.
* Manchester has the largest supply of serviced apartments in the UK outside London, according to a new report by agents Savills. The capital leads the way by some distance with 5200 units. Manchester now has 338 units, followed by Birmingham (258), Leeds (143), Bristol (125), Edinburgh (107) and Cardiff (42)
MIDDLE/FAR EAST
* Bangkok´s serviced apartment sector is expected to face a chronic oversupply in 2011, when 38 new projects with 6580 units come on stream. Twelve of the 38 projects are being jointly developed between local and foreign groups. Global partners are mainly from Middle East, Singapore and the USA. The remaining 26 are by local developers, but most of them will be signing contracts with global chains to run the apartments.

It sometimes feels like there’s nothing new under the sun when it comes to the hotel industry. I get daily press releases in my inbox: “We’ve gone green!” “You can buy our bedding online!” “We won an award!” Blah, blah, blah.
Frankly, hotels are a little boring these days. But I recently heard about a unique property in Cambodia, and it really piqued my interest. It’s a cool concept that I hope spreads.
"The One" Hotel, in Siem Reap’s Old Market area in Angkor, Cambodia, is all about a singular guest experience. The One has only one room. If you’re the guest at this hotel, you’re the big cheese. The staff members have one role — taking care of you. And this one-room hotel is luxurious. Guests sleep on a king-size bed dressed with Frette linens, stargaze on a rooftop terrace from their own personal Jacuzzi, watch a flat-screen LCD TV, and enjoy their own iPod, iBook and personal mobile phone.
So we’ve got personalized and attentive service, stunning accommodations and a great location. This place has got to be expensive, like those private villas that cost tens of thousands of dollars for a week, right? Not at all. At around $250 a night, The One has relatively low rates. As owner Martin Dishman explains, it’s “affordable exclusivity.” |
